This is a “political/technology law” kind of question.
Imagine if Barack was paying yahoo to send out a mass email to all of the users in yahoo’s directory. is that legal? isn’t that like some kind of privacy act thing? or what? if they could why haven’t they?

I’m part of a company that sells items and I just received an email from the person in charge saying not to sign up this one person because they are fraudulent and owe money. Then the email has the persons name (both used) social security number, address, birth date and license number. I know that this may be fraudulent info, but if some of it is correct can you actually send out a mass email with that kind of information?

First, I’d like to say, I’m already on the National Do Not Call registry. I’ve added my name to the opt-out list 3 times in the past 10 months or so. I’ve also called the police, but they said there is nothing else they can do. I’ve tried *69 & it sent me to a “non-working” phone number.

I keep getting these obnoxious phone calls from a company that I suspect is a front for identity theft. They call from a different phone number every time. They play this message saying, “Your vehicle’s warranty is about to expire. Stay on the line to purchase the extended warranty”. I waited for a rep on two accounts to tell them to leave me alone. They never know the make/model of the vehicle & then they want your credit card number to “buy the extended warranty”. It’s not a legitimate company. The first time, I talked to a lady & flat out told her off. She said she’d forward my call to the national do not call list. Then 2 days later, I got 3 calls in one day from them (all from different numbers, same company though). One rep hung up on me when I told him to stop calling. That’s when I called the cops.

a.) Why can’t/won’t the cops do anything about this? It has identity theft written all over it to me!

b.) How are they calling from “untracable” numbers every time?

c.) My name/number is on the do not call list. Why am I still getting calls?

A children’s magazine company did this to my children after their grandparents gifted them a subscription. I am currently left to clean up the mess. I need to know if there is any legal recourse.

I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not it was legal to mail out mailing lists for one dollar to make money? I heard that it was just as long as you do not claim to be someone you are not. Also as long as you request to be put on a mailing list so that you are not collecting and recieving money for nothing?

I have heard that yes this is legal through regular mail. I have also heard that no it isn’t if you use the internet to do this.
Which is true.

Only documented facts please.

I get SO much junk mail! I really dont use the coupons (I only shop at 2 grocery stores and I just pick up their circular, and I call ahead to restaurants for their specials)
I want to save these companies money on their postage, and I **** knowing all the paper that is wasted on this thing. For now, I just recycle it, but it is REALLY getting cold here, and I dread making the walk to my apartment complex recycling bin in below freezing temperatures.
It’s just so inconvenient. Can anyone tell me where to go to remove myself from these lists for free? Like a Do-Not-Junk-Mail registry?
